Razer has now officially announced that it has acquired the software assets of OUYA, including the content catalog and online retail platform as a part of earlier reported acquisition.
According to Razer, the technical team and developer relations personnel behind OUYA have joined Razer team and the financial details of the transaction, which closed on June 12th, will not be publicly disclosed.
Razer also noted that it will provide existing OUYA users a way to migrate to the more advanced Forge TV micro-console and Serval controller bundle in order to get as many OUYA buyers an easy way to push their games, controllers, and accounts to the Cortex TV platform on the Forge micro-console. Razer also plans to offer discounts on Razer hardware to OUYA users as well as freebies, giveaways and promotions.
Back when the acquisition was rumored and not officially confirmed, it was already clear that Razer needs OUYA team for its software as it already has a similar Forge TV console, and the company has announced that there will be significant development of the Forge TV console, controllers and software in near future.
"Razer has a long-term vision for Android TV and Android-based TV consoles, such as the Xiaomi Mi Box and Alibaba Tmall Box, to which OUYA already publishes," says Razer Co-Founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan. "OUYA's work with game developers, both triple A and indies, went a long way in bringing Android games to the living room and Razer intends to further that work. This acquisition is envisaged to usher more developers and content to the Android TV platform."
Razer will keep the OUYA brand alive and plans to publish Android TV content and Android games under the OUYA brand and keep it alive but it is obvious that bigger focus will be on the Forge TV console.
