According to a report over at WCCFTech it appears that AMD is already working on a full line of graphics cards, which will be supporting the second generation of SK Hynix's stacked high bandwidth memory. They also claim that AMD has exclusive access to HBM from SK Hynix in the beginning, giving it a competititve advantage over NVIDIA regarding their Pascal series GPUs.
In its recent news report WCCFTech is also mentioning, that they're working on the sucessor of GCN 1.2 architecture, which is scheduled for 2016 as well. The benefitting new family of GPUs will listen to the codename Arctic Islands and the codename for the individual GPU will be Greenland. Next to a new architecture these chips should be manufactured using FinFET (14/16nm) process technology and that will be a very singnificant advancement compared to the 28nm process technology which is in place today. Apart from new desktop GPUs AMD will also bring mobile GPUs to the market which make use of HBM2 memory. The fact, that HBM helps to reduce the physical footprint of a graphics chip makes it perfectly suitable for the use in small devices like notebooks.
According to WCCFTech AMD management is working very closely with SK Hynix on the development of HMB2, which they have done on before with the first generation of HBM. This makes it clear that AMD is putting a lot of weight on this technology and they have a strong interest in gaining access to this technology before its main rival NVIDIA. Especially since the supply of HBM2 will be limited at launch and immediately after. If AMD is able to secure an exclusivity deal for the first months after launch, this will mean a significant competititive advantage.
We're certainly curious to see what AMD is going to come up with by 2016. What will be most important is that the process technology can finally be switched to 14/16nm and if that happens in combination with a switch to HBM2, further increasing memory bandwidth, we're going to see seriously powerful and/or highly energy efficient graphics cards by next year.
