Samsung updates 850 EVO SSD lineup

With M.2 and mSATA 850 EVO SSDs

Samsung has updated its popular 850 EVO SSD lineup with M.2 as well as mSATA interface. To be available in capacities ranging from 120GB to 1TB, these new SSDs will share many features with the SATA interface 2.5-inch versions.

Aimed to be used in notebooks, Ultrabooks as well as desktops, both the M.2 2280 (single-sided) and the mSATA version of the Samsung 850 EVO SSD will be available in 120GB, 250GB and 500GB capacities while mSATA will also extend to 1TB.

Based on an M.2 and mSATA interface, these new 850 EVO SSDs will offer similar specifications as the SATA version of the 850 SSD and will be based on the same Samsung TLC 3D V-NAND flash and paired up with Samsung's MGX controller, except for the 1TB mSATA 850 EVO, which will use the older Samsung MEX controller.

Maximum sequential and random transfer speeds will depend on the capacity of the drive but the highest value, shared among most of the capacities, is set at 540/520MB/s for sequential read and write performance and 95K/89K IOPS for 4K random read and write performance.

Both the M.2 and the mSATA versions of the Samsung 850 EVO SSD will have same features as the SATA version including, TurboWrite, DevSleep and TCG Opal 2.0 (eDrive). As far as the endurance is concerned, the new M.2 and mSATA 850 EVO SSDs will offer 75TBW (TeraBytes Written) for 120 and 250GB models and 150TBW for the 500GB and 1TB models. Both versions are backed by a five-year warranty.

According to Samsung, the price will be set at US $100 for the 120GB, US $150 for the 250GB and US $270 for the 500GB versions while lone 1TB mSATA 850 EVO SSD will cost US $500.
