Intel to acquire Altera for US $10 billion

Rumored acquisition under way

According to the latest report, Intel is gearing up for what could easily be the biggest acquisition to date, of Altera. Altera is a well known manufacturer of SoCs and FPGAs and would allow Intel to move to new markets.

Altera, once part of AMD, makes programmable chips, SoCs and FPGAs, which are used in datacenters, server markets as well as mobile cell towers and will allow Intel to push both to new markets as well as give Intel even greater control of the server market.

According to the latest rumor, Intel could acquire Altera for a rather impressive US $10 billion, which will be the largest acquisition to date. Intel already acquired McAfee back in 2011 for US $7.7 billion, and Altera deal is apparently its next move. Intel's CEO, Brian Krzhanich, previously noted that Intel plans to push into new markets and Altera will not only open up new markets but also strengthen its position in server market.

Currently, both Intel and Altera did not comment on the rumor but, if it is true, we will probably hear more about it pretty soon.
