New AMD CPU, APU and GPU roadmaps show up

For next five years

During the PC Cluster Consortium event in Osaka, Japan, AMD's Junji Hayashi revealed new AMD CPU and GPU roadmaps covering next five years.

According to the fresh report, when it comes to CPU side of the business, as you probably already know, AMD plans to introduce two new CPU cores during next year, including one based on the ARMv8 architecture as well as standard x86 AMD64 architecture. Since we already seen some info regarding AMD's ARM K12 and X86 Zen architectures, AMD did not reveal anything new during PC Cluster Consortium event other than both architecture will feature many threads and might use simultaneous multi-threading, instead of the standard clustered multi-threading seen on current Steamroller and Excavator architectures.

When it comes to APUs, AMD plans to introduce new APUs with updated GPU architecture every two years. While discrete GPUs will follow a faster rate of release, APUs will be getting new GPU architecture every two years. According to leaked roadmaps, AMD plans to introduce a High Performance Computing APU, short for HPC APU, by 2017. This APU will have a TDP set between 200 and 300W and be focused on computing applications. While this was not possible so far due to the amount of memory bandwidth, AMD might have solved that problem with High Bandwidth Memory, something that we will see on new upcoming Fiji GPU.

While AMD did not reveal any details regarding GPU codenames, recent report from Sweclockers suggest that AMD's new GPU architecture will be based on Arctic Islands. In case you remember, AMD's Rx 200 series was based on on Volcanic Islands, while the upcoming Rx 300 series will be based on Pirate Islands architecture. AMD's Arctic Islands are expected in the second half of next year, if all goes well and according to plan.

AMD certainly has quite a plan for both its CPU, APU and GPU lineups and it will definitely have an interesting offer as it appears that HBM will be the next big thing.
