Sony's Morpheus VR headset coming in 2016

Can handle 120 FPS VR games

As expected, Sony's Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2015 was all about virtual reality (VR) and its Project Morpheus VR Headset which should be available in first-half of next year, according to Sony.

During GDC 2015, which kicked off today in San Francisco, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida showed the new prototype as well as revealed more details on what to expect when Project Morpheus gets released in the first-half of 2016.

While the date of the release is quite important piece of information, Yoshida also unveiled that Morpheus has a 5.7-inch 1920x1080 OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and 100 degree field of view. The big thing is that each pixel in the display has RGB (red-green-blue) sub-pixels.

Another big thing is that Sony's Playstation 4 was actually designed to natively support 120 FPS games, something that has not been known so far, but which now makes sense since Morpheus could use it. Apparently, Sony also has a software that can output 60FPS games to 120 FPS and will be hosting demos during GDC 2015.

The Morpheus VR headset also comes with nine tracking LEDs and Sony also managed to get latency down to less than 18ms.

Of course, these are still far from final specifications but these can also just get better as we draw closer to the launch. The prototype looks pretty much the same and we are quite sure that we will certainly hear more about Sony's VR headset in the future.
