Intel has announced its plan to rebrand Atom processors with a new naming scheme that will be in line with Intel's recent Core branding.

According to Intel, its Atom processors used in tablets and smartphones will end up with "Atom x" branding and, depending on the specifications and performance, will be known as the Atom x3, Atom x5 and the Atom x7 series.

Intel pretty much kept its CPU branding quite simple and with the introduction of the Core branding, it has become a recognizable name on retail/e-tail shelves, making a life quite easy for an average consumer.

While it has recently introduced Broadwell-based Core M series, it was a big surprise that Atom CPUs will end up as Atom x series, but it appears that Intel wants to keep it away from its "core" business, just as it does with its Pentium and Celeron branding.

While it did announce the new Atom branding, Intel did not reveal which chips will end up with a new branding, but upcoming Cherry Trail might be the best guess.

This move from Intel just makes us wonder if Pentium and Celeron lineup will get the same treatment.
