While it was a rather big file-sharing service online, Rapidshare has announced that it will be shutting down as of next month.
While the notice
published on the Rapidshare site does not reveal any reasons for this rather surprising shutdown, it is well known that Rapidshare has lost a lot of its users over the past few years, mostly due to harsh anti-piracy measures that were implemented earlier.
Founded back in 2002, Rapidshare is a Swiss-based company that was once a very popular, if not the most popular, one-click file-hosting service online. Over the last couple of years, Rapidshare was heavily involved in many legal battles and while it managed to win some of those, including the one where a German court ruled that Rapidshare is not liable for pirating users, it appears that the pressure from the U.S. was enough to push the service to shutdown.
The notice on Rapidshare's site states that the company will shutdown its service on March 31st, 2015, and recommends its current customers to backup their data.
We are sad to see Rapidshare go as it certainly marked the history of file-sharing.
