MSI unveils new passive Radeon R5 230 graphics card

An HD 6450 rebrand

MSI has unveiled its latest Radeon R5 series passive graphics card, the full-height Radeon R5 230.

Based on a full-height PCB and featuring a single slot passive heatsink that takes care of the GPU and 1GB of DDR3 memory, the new MSI R5 230 is based on AMD's 28nm Caicos Pro GPU with 160 Stream Processors and is practically a rebrand of previously available Radeon HD 6540 graphics card, with slightly higher GPU clock.

The GPU on the new MSI R5 230 is clocked at 625MHz while 1GB of DDR3 memory is clocked at 1.0GHz and paired up with a 64-bit wide memory interface. It also comes with DVI, D-Sub and HDMI outputs.

As this is an entry-level graphics card, you can expect the new MSI R5 230 to be available at somewhere below US $50, as similar graphics cards sell for around US $40.
