AMD to power all upcoming high-end iMac models

As well as some Macbooks

While Apple has previously used Nvidia's GPUs in all its All-in-One iMac systems as well as Macbook notebooks it appears that AMD will be taking over that part of the business, just as it did with Apple's Mac Pro workstation.

Expected to be unveiled tomorrow, October 16th, both the new iMacs, including the previously rumored 27-inch version with 5K 5120x2880 display, as well as the Macbook notebooks will feature AMD GPUs. Of course, lower end models will be sticking to Intel's Iris Pro integrated graphics so Intel is definitely the biggest winner here.

It is still not clear why Apple has decided to move away from Nvidia or if the future Macbook Pro models will be still using Nvidia GPU or switch to AMD GPUs as well, but one thing is clear, AMD scored a big win over Nvidia with this move.

Of course, we still do not know which AMD GPUs will Apple use in its upcoming iMac and Macbook models but hopefully we will know more tomorrow evening, when Apple is also expected to unveil new iPad models as well.
