SecureDrives' new SSDs will allow users to destroy their data via SMS. Something that we have only seen in spy movies is now available for consumers.
While it might not be smart to accidentally send a message to this SSD, SecureDrives' new SSD line allows you to delete or self-destruct your data via simple SMS. While not aimed at those that hold their family photos, music or movies on SSD, it might be smart for those that keep vital business information, trade secrets or even login credentials.
While the exact details regarding the actual specifications of the SSD itself are still unknown, the Securedrives' site lists four different SSD models that offer a mix of 256-bit AES CBC hardware encryption, two-factor authentication, GSM command over encryption key flipping and physical fracturing of the NAND flash chips.
Apparently, the SSD in question will trigger its self-destruct mode if the drive is physically opened or even if the user sets it to self-destruct when the drive is disconnected from SATA connector or if the battery is completely empty. In case someone actually manage to steal it, there is always an option to destroy the data remotely via SMS sent from any phone.
These SSDs will probably come with a hefty price tag but when security is your top priority, the price is rarely an issue.
