ASUS announces Strix GTX 980 and Strix GTX 970

Custom design all the way

In the wake of Nvidia's Geforce GTX 980 and the Geforce GTX 970 official announcements during Game24 event, ASUS has officially presented its versions which will be a part of ASUS's Strix Edition lineup, the Strix GTX 980 and the Strix GTX 970.

Both of the new ASUS Strix Edition graphics cards will feature a custom design with ASUS Digi+ VRM and Super Alloy Power components, a factory-overclock as well as the well known ASUS DirectCU II cooler that does not spin up before the GPU reaches a certain temperature, which means these will produce zero noise in normal operation or when running less demanding games. The Strix DirectCU II features 10mm heatpipes as well as two fans, making it, according to ASUS, 30 percent cooler and up to three times quieter when compared to the reference cooler.

As noted, both the Strix GTX 980 and the Strix GTX 970 will feature a factory overclock so the GPU on the Strix GTX 980 ends up working at 1178MHz base and 1279MHz GPU Boos clock while 4GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 256-bit memory interface ended up at reference 7010MHz. In case you missed it earlier, the GTX 980 is based on a fully enabled GM204 GPU which packs 2048 CUDA cores, 128 TMUs and 64 ROPs.

The ASUS Strix GTX 970 model ended up working at 1114MHz GPU base and 1253MHz GPU Boost clocks, while the same 4GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with the same 256-bit memory interface also ends up at reference 7010MHz. The GTX 970 is based on cut-down version of the GM204 GPU so it packs 1664 CUDA cores and 104 TMUs, while still retains the 256-bit memory interface and 64 ROPs.

Both new ASUS Strix 900 series graphics cards should be available soon and we even had a chance to check out the new ASUS Strix GTX 970 in our review lab. Hopefully we will soon get our hands on the ASUS Strix GTX 980 as well, so stay tuned.

Both the ASUS GTX 980 and Strix GTX 970 should be available on retail/e-tail shelves as of today with a price that should be quite close to the Nvidia launch price of US $549/€452 and US $329/€279, respectively.
