Based on what Intel showed during the Intel Developer Forum 2014, which was recently held in San Francisco, the new Skylake CPU, coming to the market during 2015, will be able to handle both DDR3 and DDR4 memory.
The information comes directly from a slide showed by Intel at IDF 2014: the new desktop Skylake CPUs, so we are talking about i5 and i7 CPUs, and the high-end Notebook and Ultrabook CPUs, will be compatible with both DDR3 and DDR4 memory, just like it happend with Phenom II CPUs by AMD, and DDR2/DDR3 memory. At the moment, DDR3 memory is the best solution for the low and mid-end range of the market, since DDR4 prices are way too high to create an affordable rig. Thanks to the double controller, Intel will offer affordable solutions for the consumer market, and high-end solutions for the Server and Workstation market, which will use DDR4 memory for its high density, high perfomances and lower power consumption.
We will have to wait until 2016, based on the analysis, to see DDR4 memory with the same price as DDR3.
