We managed to confirm that the upcoming AMD R9 285 graphics card will pack 1792 Stream Processors and will indeed be based on Tonga Pro GPU, while Tonga XT-based graphics card should come at a later date, most likely in September.
Rumored to launch sometime this month, the Radeon R9 285 aims to replace the Tahiti Pro based Radeon R9 280 graphics card. According to our sources, the Tonga Pro GPU should pack 1792 Stream Processors and come with 2GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 256-bit memory interface. The GPU clock is set at 918MHz while memory should end up working at 1375MHz (5.5GHz effective). Of course, since many AMD AIB partners will have custom designs, these clocks will vary.
Our sources also suggested that AMD is indeed planning the Tonga XT-based graphics card as well and this one should be coming sometime in September. Of course, these are still rumors and AMD can change its plans, but currently, our sources suggest that the Tonga XT GPU could end up with not only more Stream Processors, 2048 most likely, but also with a wider 384-bit memory interface, which makes sense as it will push such graphics card above the Tahiti XT based R9 280X. While no names were mentioned, logical way for AMD should be to name this graphics card as the R9 285X.
Performance wise, the Tonga Pro-based Radeon R9 285 should be faster than Tahiti Pro-based R9 280. On the other hand the Tahiti XT-based R9 285X should end up faster than the R9 280X as well as Nvidia's GTX 770.
According to our sources, R9 285 and the R9 285X could launch with similar price as the Tahiti based R9 280 and R9 280X, but some sources also suggest these could be cheaper as well.
Earlier rumors suggested that AMD Tonga GPU based graphics cards should be much more power efficient and with the right performance/power/price ratio, these should ease up the pressure from AMD and give it some interesting market advantage.
