A fresh report from research firm Gartner suggest that Chromebooks are doing quite well and should hit 5.2 million units sold by the end of this year.

According to Gartner's report, the success can be attributed to a big push in the education sector and while it still did not catch up with technology enthusiasts, the low-cost Chromebooks certainly have their appeal and are gaining ground in the market.

Chromebook shipments reached 2.1 million units in 2013, according to a report from ABI Research, and while most of these were in Nort America, all earlier reports suggest that this number could climb up to 11 million units by 2019, as it expand to global market.

Currently, Samsung leads the Chromebook pack with 1.3 million units sold with expected 64.9 percent of the market by the end of the year it is far ahead from any other company. Acer follows with 21.4 percent while HP and Lenovo hold 6.8 and 6.7 percent of the market share, respectively.




"Competition in the Chromebook market is intensifying as more vendors launch Chromebooks, with eight models in the market in 2014,"said Isabelle Durand, Gartner Principal Analyst, in a press statement. " Now that the PC market is no longer growing strongly, vendors are searching for new business opportunities. They launched Chromebooks to revive interest in sub-$300 portable PCs once the netbook bubble had burst."
