It appears that we will be getting our favorite TVs in a tube and be able to have see-through displays, at least judging by the latest prototypes showcased by LG Display.


LG has showed a rather interesting 18-inch prototype OLED flexible screen with a resolution of 1200x810 which can be rolled up to a radius of 3cm without breaking it. While 18-inch does not sound like a lot, LG already noted that it will be able to bring 60-inch flexible screen in the future. According to the company, the 18-inch flexible OLED uses high molecular substance-based polyimide film as the backplane of the flexible panel instead of conventional plastic to achieve the maximum curvature radius and also helps to reduce the thickness of the panel to significantly improve its flexibility.

LG either aims to ship its future TVs in a tube or simply wants you to be able to roll out your favorite TV, just like you would do with a projector screen/cloth.

The flexible OLED screen is not the only thing that LG has been working on as the company has also showcased a prototype transparent OLED display which sound like a great way to turn any transparent surface into display when turned on but remain see-through when the display is off. LG also noted that it managed to fix the transmittance issue that has been plaguing the currently available transparent LCD displays, which results in clearer picture.

In-Byung Kang, senior VP and head of the R&D Center at LG Display said that "LG Display pioneered the OLED TV market and is now leading the next-generation applied OLED technology. We are confident that by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches, which will have transmittance of more than 40 percent and a curvature radius of 100R, thereby leading the future display market."
