HGST, which is a part of the Western Digital, has now launched the new member of its Ultrastar C10K family, the Ultrastar C10K1800.
The Ultrastar C10K1800 is based on a 2.5-inch form-factor and is a 10,000RPM HDD targeting enterprise and data center applications. Previously only available in up to 1.2TB capacity and with a 6Gbps SAS interface, the new Ultrastar C10K1800 is definitely a move forward with 12Gbps interface and 1.8TB of capacity.
While SSDs might be much better solution in terms of performance, some applications do not need the premium of high IOPS and cost per GB is sometime much more important.
The Ultrastar C10K1800 has a couple of new features including "media cache" a disk-based caching technology providing a large non-volatile area for data storage which should significantly improve write performance, even at high workloads. In addition to the performance improvements, HGST also claims that it managed to improve power efficiency as well.
The Ultrastar C10K family usually comes in 4K native/512 emulation and 512 native versions so we are quite sure that the Ultrastar C10K1800 will be available in those versions as well.
The Ultrastar C10K1800 HDD is now shipping, and is qualified by select OEMs while FIPS certified models are expected to be available in January 2015.
