Samsung announces new 850 Pro SSD line

With 3D V-NAND flash memory

Samsung has launched its newest addition to the solid state drive (SSD) lineup, the Samsung 850 Pro which will feature the new three-dimensional (3D) vertical NAND (V-NAND) flash memory technology.

As noted, the Samsung 850 Pro SSD lineup will be based on Samsung's proprietary V-NAND technology and be ideal for use in high-end PCs and workstations. The new V-NAND vertical cell structure will overcome planar NAND architecture density limit as well as yield significant speed, endurance and energy efficiency improvements, according to Samsung.

Based on standard 2.5-inch form-factor and paired up with SATA III (6Gbps) interface, the Samsung 850 Pro, according to Samsung, will offer the highest level of performance among similar design SSDs with sequential read and write performance of up to 550MB/s and 520MB/s, respectively. The random read and write performance is at up to 100,000 and 90,000 IOPS.

The new Samsung 850 Pro SSD lineup will also offer a Dynamic Thermal Guard feature, which maintains ambient temperature while operating and prevents potential data loss from overheating.

"With the new 850 PRO V-NAND SSD, Samsung is introducing the next major evolution of SSD technology, taking the lead in delivering high-density SSDs with outstanding endurance, performance and energy efficiency," said Unsoo Kim, senior vice president of branded product marketing team at Samsung Electronics. "We are fully committed to establishing an innovative computing environment by providing customers with leading-edge V-NAND SSDs with unrivaled performance."

Samsung's new 850 Pro SSD lineup be available in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB storage capacities but, unfortunately, Samsung did not reveal any details regarding the actual availability date or the price of the new Samsung 850 Pro. The drives will be priced follwoing: 140 Euro for 128GB, 239 Euro for 256GB, 469 Euro for 512GB and 729 Euro for 1TB. Therefore Samsungs Pro line is not cheap, but that was to be expected.
