TSMC could reach 10nm by 2016

Such an ambitious vision

TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) announced their schedule for their 20nm and 10nm production processes. These two should not be delayed at all, and they are still expected in 2015 and 2016.

Everybody knows that the 20nm production process encountered a lot of problems and delays as both AMD and Nvidia planned to release the new 20nm GPU by the end of 2014, but that is obviously not going to happen. TSMC does not seem to be worried about this delay, and they are still sure that 2016 will see the first 10nm production.

The 20nm production already started in Fab 12 and Fab 14, and will reach mass production by Q3 2014. We should be pretty confident about seeing the first 20nm GPUs by 2015, even if we will probably have to wait a bit longer to see new high-end GPUs.

At the moment, the 85 percent of the production is at 28nm, and even with the new 20nm production starting in Q3, this is not going to change. TSMC is planning to hire between 300 and 400 new employees to work on R&D for the new 10nm production and expect the first samples by the end of 2015 while mass production is expected in 2016. We have no way to know if this is going to happen or not as it is just a waiting game.
