Apple announces the new Mac mini

Faster, cheaper and available as of today

In addition to the stunning 27-inch iMac with 5K Retina screen, Apple has unveiled its new Mac mini desktop computer, now starting at US $499.

Sticking to the same recognizable design, which is pretty much a small white box sitting on your desk, the new Mac mini is based on Intel's 4th Generation Haswell CPU with Intel Iris or HD 5000 graphics as well as the new OS X Yosemite OS.

The entry-level version, priced at US $499, which is a good US $100 less than predecessor, is based on 1.4GHz clocked dual-core Core i5 Haswell CPU, 4GB of memory, 500GB HDD and Intel HD 5000 IGP. The next in line is based on Core i5 2.6GHz dual-core Core i5 CPU with Intel Iris GPU, 8GB of RAM, 1TB HDD and sells for US $699.

The third, and the most powerful one is based on a 2.8GHz clocked Core i5 dual-core CPU with Iris IGP, same 8GB of RAM and 1TB Fusion drive and is priced at US $999.

You can also customize it and add a 3.0GHz dual-core Core i7 CPU, up to 16GB of RAM, 1TB of PCIe flash storage which puts you well above US $2,000.

The improved hardware is not the only upgrade that the new Mac mini got as it now packs 802.11ac WiFi and two Thunderbolt 2 ports.
