AMD to focus on mainstream market and VR

To leave high-end to Nvidia and Pascal

In a recent interview, AMD's Roy Taylor revealed that AMD will focus on mainstream market and that is exactly what Polaris architecture is about, suggesting that it will leave the high-end market to Nvidia and its Pascal GPU.

According to Roy, the Polaris is all about TAM (total addressable market), which suggest that upcoming Polaris GPUs will not be as high-end as earlier rumored but rather focus on the so-called sweetspot part of the mainstream market.

Roy also notes that the instal base of a Radeon R9 290, or a GTX 970, or above, is just 7.5 million units, which is not big enough for game publishers to target it, suggesting that the TAM simply has to be increased.

Surprisingly, Roy also talked about Nvidia's upcoming Pascal GPU based graphics cards, suggesting that these are all high-end parts, that could end up with a US $800 to $1000 price, and focus on rather small amount of enthusiasts.

The big focus for AMD will be Virtual Reality (VR) and, according to Roy, mainstream US $300 to $500 graphics cards should drive that market as these will have a much larger market share.

In that same interview with Ars Technica, Roy added that: "I don't think NVIDIA is going to do anything to increase the TAM, because according to everything we've seen around Pascal, it's a high-end part. I don't know what the price is gonna be, but let's say it's as low as £500/$600 and as high as £800/$1000. That price range is not going to expand the TAM for VR. We're going on the record right now to say Polaris will expand the TAM. Full stop".

AMD's Polaris GPUs are simply focused on power efficiency, rather than performance as AMD will have to wait for Greenland in order to address the high-end market.

After the initial rumor that AMD's upcoming Polaris 10 GPU could offer performance similar to the GTX 980 Ti or Radeon R9 Fury X, we did some digging and according to our sources, the performance will most likely be lower as AMD focus on power efficiency, somewhere around Radeon R9 390/390X, which lines up with Roy's statements that AMD will focus on mainstream market.

Upcoming Computex 2016 event will be quite interesting when it comes to graphics card market so hopefully we will get more information.
