Another R9 290 fully unlocked to R9 390X

XFX Radeon R9 290 Core Edition

While we already heard that some Radeon R9 290 can be unlocked with a simple BIOS flash, it is quite rare to find a fully enabled R9 290 with software lock on 4 CUs, just what one user at Reddit managed to get from eBay.

According to a Reddit user "ffishphone", his plain XFX R9 290 Core Edition with 215-0852000 number on the die that came from eBay, is one of those Radeon R9 290 graphics cards on the market that have a software lock on 4 out of 44 CUs, which made it quite easy to flash the card with Radeon R9 390X BIOS and get extra performance.

Of course, in order to keep up with higher clocks for the GPU and some custom settings in the BIOS, he used a closed liquid cooling for the GPU but all of this was enough for him to get a decent score in 3DMark Fire Strike benchmark and pretty much make a fully enabled Radeon R9 390X from its Radeon R9 290.

You can check out the rest of the details as well as BIOS settings and more over at Reddit via link below.
