Memory Earlier this year we took a look at our first Viper 4 DDR4 memory kit from Patriot. That kit was a quad-channel kit designed for the X99 platform. Now that Intel’s Z170 chipset is here we have dual-channel DDR4 which we’ve seen to be more stable at higher frequencies. Patriot has sent us one of their latest Viper 4 DDR4 kits which is an 8GB dual-channel kit that runs at 3400 MHz! With official timings of 16-18-18-36 at 1.35V the PV48G340C6K kit is set to perform quite well on Z170 systems. On top of the fast speeds the memory kit features a custom-designed heatspreader that is black and red that will match many popular motherboards out there. Let’s get this memory installed and see what it can do!

Memory With DDR4 prices being driven down in preparation for the launch of a mainstream chipset supporting the memory type, now can be considered a good time to bag a high density quad-channel kit.
Combining a quartet of 8GB DIMMs in a quad-channel configuration with an operating frequency of 2400MHz and CL16 timings, how will Crucial’s Ballistix Sport set of memory perform in our testing?

Memory The 5820K has shown that a strong boost in CPU performance can be obtained for a reasonable price increase over the LGA 1150 Core i7 CPUs. And many of the X99 motherboards sit well below £200, making them affordable to enthusiast buyers. But where that entire value logic of Intel’s X99 platform starts to fall short is at the expense of DDR4 memory.
One way of keeping costs to a minimum is by opting for a slower (therefore cheaper) memory kit. We test ADATA’s 2400MHz XPG Z1 16GB DDR4 kit to see how it stacks up against the higher-priced, faster alternatives.
