When a manufacturer already has an SSD like the PM830 in its portfolio then a successor must be a highly capable drive to not disappoint users expectations. With the PM840 Samsung wants to offer a new drive which should not only be a worthy successor but also push the boundries a bit further. Reading the specs already is impressive: 540 Megabyte per second sequential read performance, 520 Megabyte per second sequential write and 100'000 IOPS when reading 4 Kilobyte blocks randomly.

Behind the scenes
With the PM840 Samsung has now the successor of the PM830 ready. Since the PM830 was a highly successful drive the PM840 will have a tough time beating sales numbers of its predecessors. Looking at the specs seem quite promising though. Sequential write as well as sequential read are where they should be and the IOPS numbers are astronomically high. Samsung promises 100'000 IOPS when it comes to 4K random reads which is more than any other drive with one single controller is capable of delivering. Furthermore when you compared the PM840 to the PM830 you see, that Samsung go rid of the PM830's
Achilles heel: the sequential write performance. Nowadays the PM840 should be able to deliver 520 Megabyte per second sequential write performance. So, now we are really curious to see whether this drive is as good as the manufacturer promises or if it's not.
