Conclusion

Allgemein   + -
The first impression the Maximus VI Hero from ASUS leaves makes us want more. Once again we like the ROG design, which meanwhile belongs to the evergreens in the industry. Overall this board comes with quite a decent feature mix and especially the price of (today) 172 Euro (est. CHF 206-) is really attractive. Basically this board offers everything to set up an entry level overclocking rig and since you get the ROG BIOS there are plenty of overclocking friendly settings users can play with.   - Design

Layout   + -
Basically the ASUS Maximus VI Hero's Layout has been very well thought. Once more practical are the angled SATA connectors as well as the power- and reset-buttons. There is also a debug display which is very useful in case you should have issues with a component in your system or the board itself. Even the placement of the PCI-Express x16 is very well chosen. Between the first and the second PCI Express x16 slot there are two free slots which means that the first card in a SLI/CrossFire setup gets plenty of fresh air. Apart from that there is generally a lot of space on this board since, it hasn't been squeezed to the rim with features. Basically this is another advantage of a "not so pricy" board. Should you use this board for extreme overclocking, then you'll find it easy to isolate. Are you a gamer and you want to install a big CPU cooler, then there is plenty of space to even install todays bigges air coolers.   - Angled SATA connectors - Power/Reset-Button onboard
- Debug display
- Space around the CPU socket

Performance   + -
Let's first have closer look at overall 3D performance. Calcualting the average of all 3D benchmarks we ran, we see that this board comes in on top of bottom third. Concerning the average of all 2D benchmarks we ran, this board reaches overall third spot, which is really a good result. But what looks like kind of a solid overall result at a first glance, changes a bit, when we dig deeper into the individual results. In this case we see that this board is either somewhere in the top rankings or somewhere in the bottom third. Nevertheless we hope that future BIOS updates will level performance a bit. On another note we had a look at power consumption and in this case we clearly see that we have a board here that has not been equipped with too many additional chips, which in the end means, that power consumption is moderate.   - 3DMark Fire Strike

Overclocking / BIOS   + -
As you might have expected from ASUS you get an excellent BIOS which offers not only a boatload of tuning and tweaking options but is also very easy to use. The ROG themed BIOS always comes with a bit more of a technical touch but it is still very well structured and it won't take long until one understands what's where.   - Clear arrangement - Sheer amount of options

Recommendation   + -
Should you be looking for an ASUS ROG motherboard, which comes at a very decent price point, then there is no way around the Maximus VI Hero. ASUS finally introduced an ATX ROG board for small budgets, and we have to say it's quite a decent board. It offers everything you need to squeeze even the last bit of performance out of your system and even for gamers it offers a decent features mix.   - Overclocking
