Today I have tried this application with my Nikon and a USB OTG and I have to say that is quite interesting specially if you don't have a wireless/IR remote control for your reflex.

I have done few shots on auto and works perfectly. Obv also in manual works.

How it works:

So basically, do you connect the camera to the PC and then somehow control it via an app through the pc?

No, I was buying on amazon the IR remote but with USB OTG I can do the same things and much more.
Anyway if you camera has the WiFi you don't need OTG cable

You connect the camera to your tablet/smartphone.

Damn ... I still have to give this a shot ... I want to try sooo many things but I have time for nothing these days

Or even for Windows, something like Digicamcontrol that is free. But for your Canon there are a lot of apps.
