Alright, so I had some time to spare this weekend and decided to test out the peformance of my new drives.

As you probably know, any decent PCI-E disk controller performs better than an on-board controller (Mr. Marvell, if you are reading this...). This turned out to be true; when we look at the random seeking speeds of the WD2000FYYZ, the 2720SGL clearly provides better results than the on-board controller of the P8B-WS. My Rampage III Extreme's "SATA-3" Marvell controller also scored bad results, compared to the 2720SGL. The two SSDs may be different, but still the KC300 managed to beat the 64GB M4 at almost all stages.

Apart from that, for the sake of this benchmark, I quickly tested a RAID0 array (with Windows's disk management utility and four drives) and it turned out to be impressive: over 600Mo/s in both sequential read and write ! Random seeking speeds also greatly improved, compared to the single drive test.

The 2-drive RAID0 array shows an approximate performance of a RAIDz2 (or RAID6) with four drives. That's the kind of results I should get out of my NAS, for now. This excludes the ARC which is much faster.



Now all I'm waiting for is the case. Once I get it, everything will be at its place and ready to go. From that point I'll start real-world benchmarking (game loading, movie loading speed, media library access speed, etc.).

Yes, if you want we can of course add these results to those you already have. That way we have some sort of comparison between the two controllers. I might also add that these results have been made with CrystalDiskMark x64 and one 4GB testfile (4096 bytes sector size).

It looks like I have to grab that controller then and run some more benchmarks. Looking forward to do this by the beginning of next week

Unfortunately, the card I bought (Rocket 2720SGL, not RocketRAID ...) does not work with FreeBSD and the people over at PC-Ostschweiz (to whom I wish pain, death and eternal suffering by the way) refuse to exchange it with another product. So now I have to sell it and buy another HBA. I guess I will have to use the crappy on-board controller for now.

Yeah... At least now I've got it working. Unfortunately, transfer rates seem to be limited at around 100MB/s but I could be wrong. I guess I'll keep games like BFBC2 on my computer.
