Not that long ago, we reviewed a trio of Crucial’s fresh DDR3-1866 memory kits and established that all of them share the same, highly overclockable Micron ICs. This got us thinking whether it is possible to have a similar experience using any of the lower-rated Ballistix models as well.

To find out, we decided to order and test an 8GB set rated DDR3-1600. From all the available Ballistix submodels, we stopped our sight at the regular Tacticals as we were not looking to pay extra for the additional styling features one gets with the more expensive versions.

Manufacturer Crucial
Series Ballistix Tactical
Part Number BLT2CP4G3D1608DT1TX0CEU
Type DDR3
Capacity 8 GB (2 x 4GB)

Timings 8-8-8-24
VDIMM 1.5 Volt
Registred/Unbuffered Unbuffered
ECC No
Cooling Passive Heatspreader
Waranty Lifetime warranty

Similar to all Crucial’s recent offerings, our kit boasts a lower-than-usual voltage rating, which not only makes specs a bit harder to achieve but also allows the Ballistix memory to stand out from the competition. Given only 1.5V of space to work with, the Tactical are guaranteed to operate with even timings of 8-8-8-24, which do not look bad next to the DDR3-1600 frequency and 4GB module capacity.
