Silverstone have established a rich and wonderful legacy in the PC market, crafting some of the finest chassis on the market today. Yet while they're often regarded as one of the best (if not THE best) when it comes to making computer chassis solutions such as the Sugo, or many of their HTPC products, sometimes its easy to forget they're also masters at the very large and on occasion extreme end of the chassis market.
We saw this side of Silverstone when we were at CES earlier this year, on display were some gargantuan industrial type chassis that really dominated the room and while some of those have yet to be released it was a small taste of what big things Silverstone can do. The chassis I'm taking a look at today is another example of the extreme end of Silverstone who are more often than not better known for cool, sleek and refined designs.
The RV01 is a huge chassis, but it is not its size that makes your eyes widen, but its design. Firstly it looks like it was styled off of Batmans body armor and secondly the motherboard is rotated 90 degrees with the I/O panel pointing upwards.
Today we are going to be looking at the SilverStone Raven, a case which completely changes the way in which manufacturers usually go about designing their interiors by positioning the motherboard at a 90 degree angle, which in turn allows the physics of nature to take their course in a beneficial manner with the stack effect.
With Raven RV01 SilverStone introduced a new concept on the market: it was the first case where the motherboard is rotated 90º, making the rear connectors to be available on the top part of the case. Now SilverStone releases another case based on the same concept, Raven RV02, which costs far less than the original Raven. Let's compare the two and see if it is worthwhile buying this case.
When it comes down to looking for a high end case with ample cooling and expansion options, the SilverStone RAVEN RV02-E is one route to definitely consider. The case looks seemingly simple from the outside but it’s a work of art inside and out. The 90° rotated motherboard with three 180mm Air Penetrator brings cooling performance I’ve never seen in a case before.
SilverStone created a new chaper in computer case history with its Raven series of cases by rotating the motherboard 90º and making the rear panel of the motherboard to be on the top of the case, rather than on its back. This design change improves heating dissipation, since hot air tends to go up, and by putting the heat exhaust of the video cards on the top panel, it is easier for the air to follow its natural path. This concept was first introduced with the Raven RV01 and perfected with the Raven RV02 and the Fortress FT02. Now SilverStone is bringing a more economical version of the Raven, the RV03. Let's see if this case is a good buy.
While we've reviewed many SilverStone cases here at OCIA.net, we have yet to get a close look at any of their "extreme enthusiast" RAVEN series, other than the brief glimpses we've had at CES. SilverStone is now in their third release of the popular RAVEN tower, the RV03 which Jakob previewed at CES 2011. It was with great anticipation then when we received the RAVEN 3 for review. From our experience SilverStone has always produced high quality enclosures and the RAVEN looks to be no exception, however what really sets this series apart from other tower designs is the 90° clockwise orientation of the motherboard.

For the introduction of its fourth generation RAVEN case, SilverStone has opted to switch back to a more traditional layout with cooling fans moving air from front to rear and hardware located in its usual position within the chassis. Options are once again relegated to a single choice of color, which is fine as long as you like black. The right side panel is available with or without a window.
