There are two main schools of thought when it comes to enthusiast case design. One can be thought of as attention-seeking: make it as flashy, splashy, and eye catching as possible. The other is most often described as minimalist: strip the design down to bare essentials, keep the design accents subtle. Fractal Design has an established reputation in the second school, and today we’re going to be taking a look at one of their latest efforts: the Define R4.

Fractal Design heard the masses and took the Define R3 back to the drawing board to bring us the Define R4 Black Pearl.
Cases
Fractal Design made a great impression on us last year with the debut of the Define R3 ATX chassis and its smaller sibling, the Define Mini Micro-ATX chassis. It is hard not to love a high-quality, well-built, sleek and unobtrusive chassis and these are all qualities the Define series of chassis exhibited to us. Not content to rest on its laurels, Fractal Design went back to the drawing board to come up with several enhancements to the design of the R3 with the new Define R4 ATX chassis. The main refinements offered by the Define R4 are larger and improved fans, a more flexible hard disk drive (HDD) cage, a wider case body for easier cable routing, additional mounting options for 2.5” SSDs, a new tool-less front fan holder, support for liquid cooling radiators, a new fan controller that is integrated with the front panel, and an additional USB 3.0 front panel port.

In the PC hardware market you tend to get exactly what you pay for. It's not always the case, but 9 times out of 10 you will find that if you pay less you get less. How else can we justify handing over $110 for 12kg of cleverly crafted sheet metal and vacuum formed plastic. We pay for the brand and we pay for the looks, and some of us also pay for build quality. In this article Benchmark Reviews aims to delve deep into the Fractal Design Define R4 Arctic White Case (Model: FD-CA-DEF-R4-WH), and see if it's got what it takes to satiate the appetite of today's enthusiast. The Fractal Design Define R4 features include: the use of sound reducing materials, a 3-speed fan controller supporting up to three fans, modular drive bays and support for very large hardware.
