APH Networks reviews the Define XL R2. Is it still one of the best cases in the market today?
Cases
Time and again we have pointed out the difficulty consumers may have when trying to choose the ideal Midi tower to house their new system especially if they happen to enter a store with countless models around. However the same issue doesn’t' really apply with Full towers since nowadays most hardware manufacturers focus their efforts in reducing the size of components and so it goes without saying that PC case manufacturers also follow the same path. Now as you all know we are not much into small PC cases since the entire process of adding and removing hardware requires as much space as possible (others for example choose open rigs/test benches) thus we are always on the lookout to get our hands on every Full tower model we can. Fractal Design has been around for quite some time with sole aim to cater the needs of even the most demanding consumers out there in search for high quality PC cases offering noise insulation right from the box. Today with us we have their latest Full tower the Define XL R2.
Cases
When one is considering what chassis to use for their home theater or server build, a lot of factors come into play. In the past a traditional home theater PC build contained a small or desktop (horizontal) style chassis to help blend in with the AV stack, but that has evolved as the demands for storage and silence--as well as big screen PC gaming--has grown in importance. The Fractal Design Define XL R2 does not fit under the SFF category, as it is a full size ATX with tons of bells and whistles. The attraction for our needs is that the Define XL R2 does not sacrifice noise nor aesthetics to achieve its mission. Suitable for either the living room or closet (although what a shame that would be as it is quite attractive), we will be analyzing the merits of it to see if it is suitable of a person with more than your average HTPC needs.

Out of all the Fractal Design cases the one I’ve really wanted to get my hands on has been the Define XL, what can I say I am a fan of big cases. Well Fractal Design has recently revised the Define XL, coming out with the Define XL R2 case. The R2 takes the best parts of the original Define XL case and adds upon it. The Define XL R2 supports large motherboards like E-ATX and XL-ATX, has room for up to 8 hard drives, 4 optical drives, 9 expansions slots, has three included fans with a fan controller and much much more! Did I mention Fractal Design intends this case to be pretty quiet as well. Let’s jump in!

Fractal Design’s Define XL R2 definitely did not let us down in the style department. It’s so simplistic and sleek that it’s very pleasing to the eye. I was also happy to see very little plastic in this case, but the trade-off of that is a heavier case. I don’t know how many of you would be transporting or constantly moving a full ATX case, so weight probably won’t be an issue...

Fractal Design is releasing a new version of its Define XL full-tower case, dubbed the Define XL R2, targeted to users who want to build a high-end yet quiet computer. The first version received our "Golden Award." Let's see what is new and if the revamped model also deserves our recommendation.

Fractal Design invokes its right to revise a great chassis and give us the Define XL R2 to look at today.
Cases
Fractal Design has been in the chassis market for some time now, and those familiar with the name should instantly relate it with the words “minimalistic” and “professional”. The Swedish company has always strived to make more of less, while keeping their products aesthetically pleasing. The shear elegance of the Fractal Design Define XL R2 Black Pearl chassis then, makes it a truly unique case for those consumers who require space. Like its predecessor, the Define XL R2, a second generation XL case, is an attempt to further develop the chassis line by the ability to re-adjust, add, or remove select components of the XL case to better suit a wide range of consumer needs.
