I took a look back to see just how long ago it had been since we took a look at the original FLC-3000, and to my surprise, it had been quite some time. In fact, it was one of the first coolers I reviewed for TweakTown, so that might be why I was a little fuzzy on the January of 2009 date. From what I can recall going back over the review, the cooler performed pretty good in its day, but by today's standards, and much warmer processors, the FLC-3000 needed some love to keep pace. So Nexus went to the drawing board and rehashed an older work horse to compete with the demand.
This time we tested Nexus LOW-7000 R2, a CPU cooler with four heatpipes, a 120-mm fan and with a height of only 2 3/4" (70 mm), making it compatible with SFF cases. But will it perform like "big" coolers?
Some people like quiet computing, others like the wind tunnel experience. Personally, I fall somewhere in the middle. The winding hum of fans whisking air through my rig is calming for me; much like vacuums to a baby. However, I am not the norm, oddly. Many of today's users seem to look towards a peaceful experience in front of the keyboard instead of the days when we thought having a computer that sounded like a hovercraft was cool. Nexus thinks they have the proper balance with their new FLC-3000 (R2).

It has been quite some time since I have seen a cooler from Nexus cross my desk. But alas, they have released a new cooler that uses an older design idea that I remember in the FLC-3000. But it seems they definitely went back to the drawing board and reconfigured the layout, moved the fan on top of the cooler instead of inside it, just to hit a couple of key points. The cooler we are going to see also keeps the angled approach to cooling.
Frostytech is not going to waste your time by leaving the most important information till the very end of this review - the Nexus VCT-9000 heatsink is an interesting looking thermal solution, but it fails completely in its execution. Nexus have manufactured the VCT-9000 heatsink poorly, resulting in uneven exposed heatpipes that may not contact the processor properly. The heatsink does not perform very well as a result, so the rest is pretty much moot. It's a critical flaw that no heatsink can afford make, undermining all other potential innovations and leaving us with a 635g hunk of metal good for the scrap bin.
