Over the past year and a half, I have seen quite a few ideas at fan controls based inside of cases. While the technology has improved, and I don't see the same stopping of the fans or the limitations the older controllers showed. With all of those built into a case there are simple dials that work to limit the incoming voltage to give the end user the ability to change the fans speeds depending on the demand, or just to tune them for the noise factor. Moving from the case controllers, as there are always some that want more finite control of fans in cases that don't offer controllers built in. This usually leads to the purchase of a rheostat style, bay using, and mounted fan controller. There are many varieties of this type of controller, and their specifications and powering capabilities may or may not cover your specific needs.

Today we are looking at the premium Thermaltake solution called the ‘Frio‘ – a dual fan universal heatsink capable of cooling multi core processors with a power output of 220w. After our glowing review of the excellent Contact 29 we have high hopes that this cooler will really deliver the goods. The fact the cooler is around £30 less than the Noctua NH D14 should get you interested.

Computer fans are basically brushless motors with blades attached to them in order to move air. They are common-place inside a computer and can be constructed with different technologies. In this tutorial we will be examining one of the components found in fans that is the subject of a lot of confusion, the bearing.

Noctua has long been known for their quiet fans and have earned quite the reputation for silent operation and outstanding cooling ability. Both Shawn and Zahn have recently reviewed some Noctua heatsinks, the NH-D14 and the NH-C12P SE14, each targeted at a different audience. Today I will be taking a look at the NH-U9B SE2, a compact heatsink that is designed with lower end / HTPC use in mind.

EVGA recently announced that they have begun to sell their NVIDIA GeForce GTX 400 Series High-Flow Video Card Exhaust Bracket that is said to lower GPU temperatures by up to 5C. Lowering your video card temperatures by up to 5C for under $10 doesn't sound like a bad idea. All you need to do is remove a few screws and the bracket can be switched out quickly without having to worry about voiding the cards warranty. The question that we have to figure out is if the NVIDIA reference design exhaust bracket really that restrictive?

Noctua are one of our favourite companies when it comes to high end cooling and it would be accurate to say that their NH D14 ‘Austrian Sandwich’ shattered all our preconceptions of just what can be achieved on air.

Today we tested the Musashi VGA cooler from Scythe, which has a large but thin heatsink, two heatpipes, and two 100-mm slim fans. Check it out!

Arctic Cooling needs no introduction; they have been around forever it seems. They have been making coolers for both CPUs and graphics cards for as long as I can remember and also they’re the makers of one of my favorite thermal compounds, MX-2. The reasons behind why it is my favorite compound? Well, first off, it spreads very nice. There is no need for a special spatula or use of a credit card. Just put a blob in the middle of the die and spread it around by any means. Secondly, it takes no time to cure and has no conductive properties, a definite plus, especially if you apply too much material. In this case, what squeezes out the side will cause no harm; it just makes for a bit more cleanup later. The last reason I usually go for a tube of MX-2 is the availability and pricing.

We tested the Zalman VF3000A VGA cooler, which consists of a huge heatsink with five heatpipes and two 92-mm fans with blue LEDs. Check out its performance!
