I have seen just about every variation on materials, angles, bling and fans in what is readily available on the market in notebook cooling products. From the days of a beanbag strapped to a piece of wood, set on your lap, just to keep the heat away, cooling tech has come a long way. The frame materials are either a choice of aesthetic appeal, or you go with plastic due to budgetary reasons. Either way is no better than the other, as long as the frame is sturdy and vibration free. The lighting and hocus pocus that sells some coolers, doesn't need apply really. For the down to basics idea of "cooling" the laptop, "bling" does very little to cool anything. So essentially it all comes down to the fan or fans in the unit that are going to make the biggest difference in any notebook cooler.

I always enjoy the feeling of having something soft and warm on my lap. It feels good and comfortable, but sometimes my lap gets a little bit too hot. Obviously, I was talking about my kittens, not sure where your mind went, haha. I got two new kittens a few weeks ago, and they definitely do a good job at keeping my lap warm. It is almost as if I left my laptop on my lap for a few hours -- which isn't a very typical thing for me when I am at home. However, when I'm on the go, my lap happens to be a convenient place, and I guess the whole 'lap' part of laptop really starts to show. In the past, some of my laptops seems to be a mini heater. Normally, you would expect the thought of something smoking hot in my lap being enjoyable; however, this kind of hot instead reminds me of sunburn. In my last review for the Cooler Master NotePal X-Slim, the cooler was designed to be lightweight and portable. This time, we are going to look at a different kind of portable laptop cooler. While this one isn't meant to be something you would like to carry around, it still works wonders on your lap. This brings about the next question. Is it ready to please your lap, while you are pleasing your girlfriend? (Of course, by 'pleasing', I mean talking to her on Skype or Windows Live Messenger. You guys really need to stop thinking about those other kinds of things). Well, let's take a look at what's chilling today with the Cooler Master NotePal LapAir!

Most of the laptop coolers aren't very efficient at cooling my particular Lenovo that I use to test with, but they do in fact keep the top of your lap cool by removing the whole notebook from direct contact. When I think notebook cooling, I feel the notebook is what needs to be cooled primarily and not necessarily do I need it to cool my legs. For my usage of many of the coolers I have tested, they sit on my desk. While lights and flashy finishes are all nice and have their market, I find myself gravitating towards the aluminum solutions that come with either one large fan, or a pair of smaller fans attached in some manner.

For the past few years Cooler Master has really been pushing their Notepal notebook cooling product line. They have introduced a wide variety of coolers with various cooling designs, different sizes, and for different uses. Even so, of their product line there has been one line specifically that I have been especially fond of. I have been using my Notepal U3 on my 18.4 inch notebook every time I travel. This is both because of its portability and also it’s cooling capabilities. Cooler Master is now introducing a new version of its U2, the Notepal U2 Plus. I’m not sure what they can improve on the original, but I’m excited to find out.

The Cooler Master NotePal U2 Plus Laptop Cooler is basically a sweet looking slab of aluminum with a couple of detachable fans. It's simple, but great design that works well. It also doubles as a laptop carrier, as you can fit your laptop on the inside.

Looking at a few different concepts of how companies are approaching cooling today’s laptops, I have gotten a grasp of what seems to work out and what doesn’t do more than keep your legs cooler. While that is one concern when looking to buy a notebook cooler of any sort, cooling the components inside is more important, especially with my Lenovo. There is also a third factor, and that is styling. If this stand is going to sit in the open while you are out with your laptop, you may also be concerned with how it looks on the desk while you are away.

Have you ever been on a long car ride in the middle of a blazing hot summer afternoon without air conditioning? Well, for those who have always had air conditioned cars, you should try it for a day. Make sure to try it with the windows rolled up, and you will get a feeling of what being stuck in a steam room with a bunch of very large men is like. Thankfully, I am one of the fortunate individuals who always had air conditioning in their car. Why am I going off about air conditioning? Well, when I am playing games for a long period of time, which is a rare occurrence in itself, the laptop I am playing on usually starts to feel like it has been locked up in a car with all the windows closed. Of course, anyone who plays games knows the last thing you want is to be uncomfortable while fighting the boss, or searching for secret items (Which probably don't even exist). Once upon a time, I had an old laptop that seemed to think cooling solutions were overrated. After a couple minutes under heavy load, the laptop, without any warning, would cut the power off. I was very grateful when someone finally figured out some poorly designed laptops have a tendency to overheat, and they came up with cooling pads. Cooler Master has kept that going with a wonderful array of NotePal coolers. With the new X-Slim is a portable notebook cooler, let's find out if it has what it takes to turn off the stove while I'm teaching a boss who is really the boss!

We just got done looking at a notebook cooling solution with the NotePal U Stand. This is quite the laptop cooler; it offers all sorts of bells and whistles like extra USB ports and even a fully adjustable top to give you five angles to be able to use your laptop of choice. It's aluminum has great fans. I could go on for a while about this one, but I need to return to the task at hand and change gears into a more simple train of thought for the latest submission to our labs.
