The Noctua NF-F12 120mm PWM fan is Noctua’s latest PWM fan. The main things we look for in a fan are performance and aesthetics. Noctua is known for extremely high quality products and aesthetics that not everyone agrees about. Today we’re going to see whether Noctua can maintain their claimed quality by looking at the NF-F12!
When it comes to CPU coolers there are some companies we know and trust and Zalman is one of them. We have been reviewing Zalman CPU coolers for quite sometime now and they always seem to impress us. Their radical designs, quality materials, ease of use and great performance make them one of the premier brands when it comes to CPU cooling. At CES this year we got a glimpse of Zalman’s largest CPU cooler to date the CNPS12X. This massive CPU cooler features three 120mm fans, a dual heatsink design and 6 copper heatpipes. The new fan controller from Scythe has retractable buttons which are useful in a number of cases, but also includes features like 12V start-up voltage, alarms or power feed control. The VFD display in front lets us check the current fan speeds and temperatures (in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit) for each channel.
Over the years I have had many CPU coolers go through my hands some good, some not so good, some so flimsy just installing them almost destroyed them, some so bulky and heavy I had to make a prop to prevent one snapping a board.
The two demands we place on a case fan - to displace as much air as possible while producing the least amount of noise - are inherently mutually exclusive. In order to move more air, a fan needs to rotate faster, which produces more sound. The easiest way to make a fan more silent is to make it turn slower, but this will of course influence the amount of air it displaces.
This is where smart designers come into the picture. Case fan manufacturers try to increase the volume of displaced air by changing the design and number of the blades. We have seen a wide variety of designs: fan blades with notches like a golf ball, blades with a slant, and serrated blades. Nothing is too crazy to try. For each new attempt the manufacturer has a (vaguely) scientific foundation of why that particular design is better. In the end, it’s the performance that counts.
The same applies to the bearings used in the fans, something we've examined previously. In addition to the tried-and-proven ball bearings and sleeve bearings there are now exotic derivations such as rifle bearings, twister bearings, and so on. The goal is always the same - less noise. Again, it’s not the design but the end result that is important.
Today we are taking a look at the Titan Fenrir Siberia Edition CPU cooler which has both horizontal and vertical heatsinks. As such there is clearly plenty of potential for extracting heat from the CPU, just like having two radiators in one room of your house it will greatly improve the heating effect.
Up for review today is another CPU cooler, this one is the latest and greatest from a company called Phanteks. I’ve not had the pleasure of reviewing their products before so this is a treat for me. The cooler is the PH-TC14CS_RD where the RD means red, yes the cooler is red in color but there are several other color options available. The PH-TC14CS is a rather beefy cooler and it comes with two 140mm fans making it even larger in size, but it’s meant to be a top-notch performer and I can tell you that it is easily keeping my Core i7 2600K cool even while overclocked. The cooler can be used in different configurations offering several mounting options in your case, one of them is the ability to use one fan on top allowing you to use larger style ram in your system.
