Deepcool's Ice Matrix 400 heatsink is a relatively thin profile tower cooler that stands 160mm tall, but is only 71mm deep. It weighs upwards of 1030grams and is built with no fewer than four, 6mm diameter copper heatpipes. As with DeepCool's previously tested heatsinks, the Ice Matrix 400 ships with a novel kind of fan that skips the whole rubber-fan-post fad for a resilient layer of rubber in the fan frame itself.

Tthe Coolermaster TPC-812 is the first CPU heatsink to pass our test bench employing both vapour chambers and heatpipes in one package. Combined, the TCP-812 heatsink has six 6mm diameter heatpipes as the primary heat conductors and two 19x3mm vapour chambers as the secondary heat conductors. These eight thermal conductors join a chunky nickel plated copper base plate with a 112mm aluminum tall fin stack.

As the move towards smaller and lighter netbooks begins to gain in popularity, the dominance of older high heat-producing full size notebooks may eventually ebb over time. True, there will always be those users who want a larger screen size, or need the full performance of a high-end, multi core processor, and for as long as there are laptop computers making the tops of our thighs uncomfortably warm there will likely be coolers designed to combat it.
