The Frio Extreme is a large twin tower heatsink with two massive 140mm fans and a commanding foot print of 150mm square! Standing 161mm tall and weighing 1.23 kilograms, the Frio Extreme is destined for full tower gaming cases with plenty of room to spare. As you might expect, the Frio Extreme's dual 140mm PWM fans are arranged in a push-pull configuration and scale in speed from 1800-to-1200RPM. Behind each fan is a 110mm tall aluminum fin tower connected by a row of six standard heatpipes to a nickel-plated copper base plate. The twin fans drive up to 106CFM of air each, so the heatsink is a bit loud when running at full clip.
On Frostytech's test bench today is Phanteks's PH-TC14PE (orange) heatsink. The Phanteks PH-TC14PE's five, 8mm diameter copper heatpipes fan out from a thick nickel-plated copper base plate into two 115mm tall anodized aluminum cooling towers. The fans that ship with the Phanteks PH-TC14PE (orange) are 140mm in diameter and use a nine-bladed impeller with three small notches and vertical winglets on each blade. The manufacturer describes the bearings thusly; 'updraft floating balance bearing'. Translation = sleeve bearing.
Starting the day with a nice trip to the nearest beach (it may just be 20 miles away but with that much traffic it gets to be an entire trip until you actually get there) is perhaps the only reason as to why i would ever feel exhausted enough to think about doing a review (too much heat tends to do that). The Thermax Eclipse III is better balanced than the Eclipse II, its predecessor. The old version was very loud, and fortunately the Eclipse III is much better in this regard. Still, the new Thermax Eclipse is primarily interesting if you want lots of cooling for a low price. This was more unique a couple years ago, now there are several coolers on the market for similar prices that offer the same or better performance.
