Today we are taking a look at the Thermaltake Jing silent CPU cooler. The Jing is a dual 120mm fan tower cooler with being quiet and performing well as its goal. Join us as we stack the Jing up against a dozen other coolers on our Intel Core i7 test bench and also see how quiet the Jing is compared to the kings of quiet, Noctua.

The AMD HD6990 has needed a third party cooling solution now for some time and unless you fancy watercooling your system, there hasn’t been a whole lot of choice. Arctic Cooling have spotted the gaping hole in the market and are due to release their Accelero Twin Turbo 6990 cooler which features a custom cooling solution with two 120mm fans and two separate racks of heat pipes across 86 aluminium fins. Impressively, it is also CrossfireX compatible, if you have deep enough pockets.

With the introduction of Intel’s latest range of processors – the i7 series – thermal solutions manufactures have been caught between two minds: to create a new cooler which is better able to counter the 130W TDP of these new processors or to create a mounting mechanism for an existing CPU cooler in their range to allow it to fit the LGA1366 motherboards.

Laptop coolers are becoming a very popular accessory as more and more people turn to using laptops as their choice of computer system. Laptops do have a reoccurring theme that nearly all get quite hot, this is due to their design and their compromise between thickness, size and airflow. Unfortunately, this is not too good for the components and more importantly your lap.

Ching Chang Ping Pong Chan Zhou and Jing. I wonder, if you had to take a guess, would you say that those random sounds and letter combinations are of Chinese origin? Well, you have guessed right. In fact, nowadays, with a population of over 1.3 billion Chinese in China alone, estimating to over 19% of the world's population (Wikipedia for the win!), it is no wonder that such sounds have become daily Chinese stereotypes in North America. So, when I heard I was reviewing the Thermaltake Jing, I raised an eyebrow. As you know, much of the staff here at APH Networks is Chinese. With this, a sense of pride comes when a manufacturer names a product that we can relate to. When the Jing was released, my main focus was not directed towards the product name however, but it was geared towards how it would compare against its loud brother. Actually, the Chinese character "Jing" simply means silence or quiet, and so today's heatsink review on the Thermaltake Jing takes on an entirely different approach from its older brother, the Thermaltake Frio. When Jonathan, my fellow colleague, reviewed the Frio back in April of 2010, the conclusion was made that the heatsink could be so obnoxiously loud, that it unfortunately made the unit not as practical for silent PC enthusiasts and overclockers alike. This time however, Thermaltake decided to tame the little shy brother, Jing, creating a smaller but hopefully more practical unit for the mass. Can the Jing beat its older brother with Kung-fu and other fu's? Scroll down to find out!

For a gaming or other performance system I'd have no trouble recommending this product, I also feel it would also be perfect for a two/three fan push-pull setup on a performance heatsink where the fan speed needs to be fine-tuned. I would however find quite hard to recommend these fans for a purpose built quiet system as you would have to use the included fan controllers on every one to get it down to a suitable volume level, this would be messy and often impractical. That being said these fans do offer a good airflow to noise performance and should be ideal for most users.

Recently we’ve been taking a look at some pretty high end CPU coolers which, despite the different fin configurations and heatpipe layouts, are all reasonably similar. The Cooler Master V8, which we are to take a look at in this review, is a litter different in that although it is based on a tower format design it has added heatsinks on both sides and a centrally mounted fan.
