Creativity comes from looking for the unexpected and stepping outside your own experience." - Masaru Ibuka. This quote defines an effective business practice that has made many companies explode with growth. The NXZT HAVIK 140 is an example of a company stepping outside of its normal products range, and to produce something they have not produced before. Apple, for instance, probably would not have be where it is today if the iPod was never developed. Another example, if Ford had not used assembly line techniques for mass production, and provided inexpensive goods with high wages, the company wouldn't have been any better off than the other automotive manufacturers of its time. It isn't hard to see that doing something different or entering a new area can certainly provide benefits to both the company and the consumers. The question is, will the HAVIK 140 provide the same kind of benefits? Well, it wouldn't be fair to spoil that answer; you will just have to read on to find out. Now, before we move on, I keep asking myself what HAVIK means. Well, HAVIK is a homophone of the word 'havoc', so I guess you could say the NZXT HAVIK 140 will pillage the heat coming from your processor. However, havik is also Dutch for hawk, and I can't help but wonder if it will soar above the competition? Let's see about that!

Spire's Gemini SP986B1-V2-2P heatsink is a minor variation on the popular Eclipse II tower heatsink design, the most notable difference being a novel bifurcated fin stack. To 'bifurcate' means to split into two... so in other words, the fin stack is split down the middle and the fin edges are closed off so air can only pass through the heatsink from front-to-back. This unique 'ducting' approach essentially creates two independent fin towers connected by six, 6mm diameter U-shaped sintered metal wick copper heatpipes.

The Thermalright Shaman is made mostly of aluminum with its fifty-five fins. This cooler is large, with dimensions of 160mm long. It isn't that long, but with the 132mm in width and 54.5mm of thickness, this four slot cooler is going to need a lot of room to house it. Along with the mass of aluminum, there are the eight, yes eight, 6mm heat pipes.

Ah, another day, another CPU cooler. This time it's from NZXT, a company that started out making low-priced computer cases with features and quality normally seen only on more expensive products. Then they added a line of premium sleeved cables, case fans, mice, higher-end cases like the critically acclaimed Phantom, and even power supplies. The NZXT HAVIK 140 is their first CPU cooler, and they're aiming directly at the high-end air cooling market with an MSRP of $74.99. Benchmark Reviews tests their latest offering to see if it can play with the big boys.

Cooler Master is a name well known to enthusiasts for their extensive line of enthusiast computer equipment, including cases, CPU coolers, power supplies, and more. They're probably best known for their coolers, though, and today Benchmark Reviews has the Cooler Master Hyper 612 PWM to test against a collection of other coolers. This appears to be an update of Cooler Master's existing Hyper 212 cooler, but how will it perform? Putting it up against an overclocked and overvolted Core i7 950 processor will reveal all.

Most of the laptop coolers aren't very efficient at cooling my particular Lenovo that I use to test with, but they do in fact keep the top of your lap cool by removing the whole notebook from direct contact. When I think notebook cooling, I feel the notebook is what needs to be cooled primarily and not necessarily do I need it to cool my legs. For my usage of many of the coolers I have tested, they sit on my desk. While lights and flashy finishes are all nice and have their market, I find myself gravitating towards the aluminum solutions that come with either one large fan, or a pair of smaller fans attached in some manner.

This time we are testing the Akasa Venom Voodoo, a CPU cooler with a tower heatsink, six direct-touch heatpipes and two 120 mm fans. Check it out!

All CPU coolers promise effective CPU cooling, but how each one manages their goal can vary wildly. One may be super-quiet but be the size of a car, while another may be modest-sized but sound like a jet engine. The Frio OCK and Jing from Thermaltake aren't so extreme, but make a perfect case for noise vs. size vs. cooling performance.
