Recently, we published a test where we tried to find out which position of a case fan is the best for CPU temperatures. Now, let's expand this experiment, comparing the temperatures of the computer "hot spots" under different case fan configurations. Check it out!

On the test bench today is a boxy tower-style processor heatsink from Cooler Master called the Hyper 612 PWM. This is a pseudo-quiet cooling heatsink built around six, 6mm diameter copper heatpipes and a single 120x120mm PWM fan. The fan rotates at 2000-600RPM and offers at best, excellent thermal performance. At the slowest fan speeds you can expect very quiet but generally average performance from the Hyper 612 PWM heatsink.

While we couldn't possibly cover even a fraction of the fans on the market, in this article we are going to compare five 120mm fans to see which one is the superior fan for keeping you computer both cool and quiet. We will be taking a look at the DB-122 and DB-125 from Kingwin, as well as the NF-F12 PWM, NF-P12, and NF-S12B FLX from Noctua.

Can Be Quiet!'s enthusiast-grade Silent Wings 2 (Dark Wings DW1) fans compete against the best that Noctua and Phanteks have to offer?

On the heatsink test bench today is NZXT's Havik 120 heatsink, a tower style CPU cooler designed for Intel socket 2011/1366/1155/1156/775 and AMD socket AM2/AM3/AM3+/FM1 processors. The Havik 120 is a pretty typical tower heatsink that ships with two 120mm PWM fans (NZXT's special 'FZ' 13-blade fans) capable of each moving 75CFM per the mfgr's spec. One novel aspect of the Havik 120's design are the edges of its aluminum fins. Each fin has a blunt knife edge which helps ease airflow through the aluminium fin stack by decreasing air flow resistance.

The NH-L12 from Noctua was a little surprise for me. I felt the little guy wouldn’t hold up to the heat. It did, and for users that have a smaller/narrower case and not interested in the least to overclock then the NH-L12 would be rather perfect. Top it off with Noctua’s 6 year warranty and awesome build quality, the NH-L12 has win all over it...

SilenX's EFZ-120HA5 tower heatsink is built around three 6mm diameter exposed base copper heatpipes that pass through a sharp-edged stack of dimpled raw aluminum fins. A 120mm fan capable of rotating at 1600-800RPM ships with the cooler, additional fan mounts are supplied for a second rear fan can be installed (not included).
