Last week, we reviewed the Noctua NH-D15S. Now it is time for the latest C-series cooler from Noctua. How will the latest NH-C14S tep up against the original NH-C14?

The Noctua NH-C14 is a big heatsink for sure, but remarkably by orienting the fans and aluminum fin stack in a top-down direction, Noctua keep the heatsinks' height to just 130mm. That's a far cry more compact than your typical 160mm tall tower heatsink, but that hasn't made the NH-C14 into a slouch. Where Frostytech's Intel LGA775/1156 thermal test platform is concerned, the Noctua NH-C14 heatsink leads the Top 5 Heatsinks Chart. The competition is a little stiffer on the AMD front with the NH-C14 trailing the front runner by about 2.2°C.

With the relatively recent introduction of our new LGA2011 CPU Cooler database based on our primary Intel Core i7 3930k some of you have asked if it's possible for us to test some of the older coolers i reviewed a long time ago. Unfortunately many of those are not LGA2011 compatible, at least not up until this moment and even if they were i simply lack the time to do something like that from scratch especially since that would also mean delaying tests/reviews of brand new products. However today we will be taking a look at a product which i also reviewed in the past and more specifically the NH-C14 high performance low-profile CPU Cooler by Noctua.

Noctua continues to broaden their range of coolers to meet differing needs. The NH-C14′s dual fan design allows you to adapt it to your needs should you have restrictions for height in either your case or on your motherboard. It utilizes the secuFirm2 mounting system which makes installation a breeze on even such a large cooler. As we have come to expect the NH-C14 contains top notch quality and cooling as we have come to expect from Noctua.

I once heard a very intriguing quote that went something like, "A wise old owl sat on an oak. The more he saw, the less he spoke. The less he spoke, the more he heard. Why aren't we like the wise old bird?" Let's pull up some of our good old high school English Language Arts skills, and answer the following question: What does an owl symbolize in this day and age? In fact, what does owls have anything to do with technology in the first place? Well, let's go over a little history lesson. In Greek culture, there is a little owl that represents the Greek goddess Athena. Unlike most gods and goddesses, she represents wisdom, science, and strategy; and goes by savvy considerations rather than brute force to endure quests and adventures. In society today, the accepted norm in which an owl symbolizes is intelligence and prudence with their distinct skills of observation in the dark. Are you catching on now? So, let me ask you again, what does owls have anything to do with technology? The first thing that comes to my mind is owls have nocturnal vision, and the word very much sounds like the company Noctua. From our brief history with Noctua, they are famous for noise optimized heatsinks and fans. As we have seen before from our reviews on products such as the Noctua NH-D14 and Noctua NH-U12P, both are heatsinks which are proven to be great competitors in the computer market. To add onto the list, what we have here today is Noctua's NH-C14 heatsink. So is this how Noctua pull it off? Is Noctua that wise old owl sitting in the oak? Keep your nocturnal eyes busy to find out!

Noctua have a justified reputation of silent, yet powerful cooling. Partnering with the Austrian Institute of Heat Transmission and Fan Technology(!) allows some serious science behind their products, and as seen in the performance of their other kit we’ve reviewed it seems to work. So it is with anticipation that I will be looking at their huge NH-C14 cooler.

Noctua's NH-C14 is a huge cooler, both in physical size and performance. The build quality is excellent and the mounting solutions are very robust and easily installed. I particularly like the fan clip design and implementation. With two included fans, a feature rich accessory package including LNA and ULNA fan speed reducers, a screwdriver and an enameled metal case badge, the NH-C14 would seem to be a dream product for the enthusiast/overclockers among us.
