Aircooling
When building a brand new computer choosing the right components is directly tied to the type of use ment for it so obviously you wouldn't use the same ones you'd use with the office system as you would with the one in your living room. Needless to say the same applies for the CPU cooler since a gaming oriented system would need one with a much higher cooling efficiency compared to that of an office system or even a HTPC. The downside however with really powerful CPU coolers is their massive size so if you wanted to place one inside a mITX/mATX case chances are you'd be out of luck. Well manufacturers know this all too well so for the past 2-3 years many of them have focused a lot in the design of compact CPU coolers with impressive cooling potential (for their size always). Noctua has already released several such models in the market but with their latest NH-D9L D-Type Tower Cooler they seem to be taking things one step further.

If i had to guess what most of your reading these lines right now use to keep the temperatures of your CPUs in check chances are that most of you are still using regular CPU air coolers and why not since they can provide excellent cooling efficiency without asking for much in return like custom watercooling kits and even some AIO models? Unfortunately as I’ve already mentioned numerous times in the past CPU air coolers have reached a level of performance which i really doubt they will ever be able to surpass (AIO solutions might) but in the long run they may not have to since miniaturization (smaller manufacturing process) tends to reduce power requirements and thus temperatures. With the same reasoning in mind Noctua recently announced several "compact" CPU air coolers but for people wanting something more without however having to worry about clearance issues they also released a "tweaked" version of their flagship NH-D15 model which they named the NH-D15S.

Continuing on from the Noctua NH-C14S review, we have another revision of another Noctua cooler. This time the flagship NH-D15 gets the treatment in the form of the NH-D15S. The Noctua NH-C14S is a really impressive cooler and a typical Noctua design, unusual but sublime in its execution.

Weighing 1,320 grams with both fans installed, Noctua's NH-D15 heatsink is big. It stands 162mm tall and has a footprint of 151x161mm so prospective buyers will want to measure their case clearances first. It's six heat pipes are soldered to the nickel plated copper base plate and aluminum cooling fins; overall the fit and finish is top notch.

Noctua are one of the best CPU cooler manufacturers around, their CPU coolers have pushed air cooling to new highs over the last few years and most importantly, their NH-D14 was and still is one of the best on the market. The rule generally goes that if something isn’t broken, it doesn’t need fixing, but the NH-D14 is getting a little older now and the competition from companies like be quiet! and Thermaltake (to name but a few) means that Noctua have to do something to stay relevant. The NH-D15 is based on the NH-D14 design, but brings with a it a few tweaks and improvements that Noctua hope will help them compete with many of the newer rival products.

That's right, the Noctua NH-D15 has hit the labs for testing. Let's see if Noctua can claim the top of the heap like its predecessor did in our results."

Tower CPU Coolers may have been around for roughly a decade now but dual tower CPU coolers (also known as sandwich CPU coolers) are quite new in and only count 5 years in the market (at least consumer models). Of course in these 5 years pretty much every single manufacturer has tried their luck such a solution but Noctua was the very first to do so with their massive NH-D14 back in late 2009 a CPU Cooler which is still considered as one of the best to date. Noctua did make some slight improvements on the NH-D14 in late 2011 and since they also made it compatible with the latest Intel LGA2011 socket they renamed it as the NH-D14 SE2011. Having known Noctua since the beginning however we knew that this wouldn't be their last attempt in the dual tower arena and since they just released the NH-D15 it seems that we were on the spot and what better way to celebrate than checking it out?
