When I think of Noctua I am reminded of their very large and powerful CPU coolers. These cooler have rivaled even some liquid cooling systems. Noctua knows cooling but these larger CPU coolers do not fit in all systems. That is why they have come up with the NH-U12S and NH-U14S which are guaranteed to fit in your system even if you have memory with larger heatspreaders. Today we are taking a look at Noctua’s NH-U12S. This cooler features a tower design with aluminum fins and a copper base and heatpipes. There is a single 120 mm Noctua NF-F12 PWM fan and the cooler uses Noctua’s SecurFirm2 mounting system for easy installation. Will this smaller cooler still provide the excellent cooling that we know Noctua for? Read on as we find out.
Getting a CPU cooler that is; 100% RAM compatible, small enough in height to fit into most midtower cases and quiet enough for everyday usage is a tough ask. Then if you want that same CPU cooler to also have high performance cooling, you really are entering a niche market that very few companies serve. The Noctua NH-U12S is one the newest versions from Noctua’s NH-U series of CPU coolers that were first introduced in 2005. The Noctua NH-U12S CPU Air Cooler is one of the better smaller CPU coolers around. It has a copper baseplate, many copper heatpipes, lots aluminum fins and one large fan, but another can be added. Austrian Cooler giant Noctua released a while back two new additions to their popular CPU cooling line-up. Two single slim design tower coolers in two different versions: the NH-U12S utilizing a 120mm fan and it's bigger brother the NH-U14S, sporting a bigger 140mm fan. Both coolers are designed for uncompromising performance, however not at the cost of mainboard and RAM compatibility. Unlike other cooler manufacturers Noctua isn't updating it's product range on the fly, a clear sign that the design and technology behind their products is reflected in great lasting performance and reliability. The latter statement is backed up by a 6 year warranty on the cooler and included Fan.
At the end of the day, the only problems with the NH D14 are the price (around £70) and the gargantuan size which can cause fitting problems with a selection of supporting hardware. Enter the NH U12P which received an update in recent months to Special Edition SE2 status. This cooler can be picked up for around the £50 mark in the UK, so there are substantial savings to be made.
