There have been more than a few interesting things that we have seen in reviewing technology over the past few years. Today we start on an adventure. Despite reviewer's claims, Samsung has never stated the endurance life of its new TLC NAND flash used in the new 840 SSD. We're going to find out just how many program erase cycles the flash can take... in time.
Today we take a look at a new Solid State Drive offering from OCZ, the Vector Series SATA III SSD. The Vector joins the Vertex models in OCZ's High-Performance category drives, touting a 7mm low profile design, Indilinx Barefoot 3 controller and either 128GB, 256GB or 512GB capacities. Like the Vertex 4 that Shawn reviewed last year, the Vector Series touts an impressive 5-year warranty. Performance looks to be on par with the Vertex as well, with over 500MB/s claimed sequential read/write speeds (on the larger capacity models) and around 100,000 random 4k IOPS.
Having already served up a 128GB 840 Pro RAID 0 review we know that the fastest MLC based two drive array you can buy today is a Samsung 840 Pro array. Today we have for your viewing pleasure a larger 256GB 840 Pro two drive array. The 256GB 840 Pro is slightly faster than a 128GB 840 Pro and ever so slightly slower than the 512GB 840 Pro (which as you will see very soon in an up-coming review is the holy grail of MLC based drives)..
Transferring files between 2 computers has been made extremely easy for a while now with flash drives. These devices are small enough to fit in our pocket, deliver fast transfer speeds, and can hold quite a lot of data. Today we are taking a look at one of Kingston’s latest flash drives. Announced this year at CES the DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G3 is a USB 3.0 drive that features read speeds of up to 150 MB/s and write speeds up to 70 MB/s. The drive has a solid metal matte finish and retractable design that protects the USB connection when it is not in use. Today we have the 64GB version on hand to see what it can do!
SSDs have slowly started shrinking in form factor from 2.5" with 9.5mm height to 7mm height and now the biggest reduction in size of all, the mSATA drive. These diminutive drives pack the same performance punch as their larger counterparts complete with a 6Gbps interface but will fit in devices that 2.5" drives have no chance of fitting. Western Digital or just WD is a well known hard drive manufacturer, and they really had
a break trough with their Raptor drives some years back.
The product we are looking at here, is their WD Black WD4001FAEX with a 4TB capacity.
But what about the performance?
If we exclude the unfortunate floods that took place in Thailand roughly a year ago (and forced several factories to cease HDD manufacturing and shipping) HDD prices normally get serious cuts each day that goes by (as do SSD prices) and so currently even the highest capacity 4TB models retail at such prices that can be easily purchased by casual users and gamers around the world. That however mostly stands with entry level models that offer exactly what most users want and that's a good price to capacity ratio without however sacrificing performance. On the other hand however professionals and enterprise users want the best money can buy not only in terms of performance and capacity but also in terms of durability under extreme conditions and that's where enterprise class HDDs like the latest Seagate Enterprise Capacity 3.5 V.3 (former Constellation ES.3) 4TB SATA III come in.
