2014 is finally here people and just like one of my friends says each year is a brand new 365 paged book so make sure you all write each page the best way you can. 2014 is a particularly special year since there are many things for us to look forward including the new X99 chipset based mainboards by Intel (finally something to replace our X79 system although we will keep it as well to continue with some of our databases) which will also use the brand new DDR4 RAM, new SSD/HDD hybrid models with large capacity NAND flash, new HDDs with at least 6TB capacities and of course new SSD NAND flash controllers. CES may just be 4 days away but some prototypes may actually make it there in time (if not we will probably see them in this year’s CeBIT) so if you live near Las Vegas i strongly recommend attending if you'd like a first row seat on everything new to come in 2014. Now normal SATA III SSDs may not be the hottest hardware component around currently but thanks to all the continuous price drops sales keep increasing so naturally every manufacturer out there wants a piece of the pie. Kingston has been amongst the top players for quite some time now and although they have enough SSD models to cover every consumer out there still they keep adding more the last of which is the SSDnow KC300.

Today’s review is of the Mach Xtreme DIY series 32GB (MLC) SATA-DOM, a SATA II (3.0GB/s) miniaturized SSD designed for high-read, low-write usage scenarios that only require a small operating system; such as NAS enclosures, routers, set-top boxes, point-of-sale devices, hand-held devices, gaming machines, etc.

Synology describes its new DS414j as the successor to the DS413. It’s a 4-bay NAS device, aimed at home users and SOHO environments requiring up to 20TB of storage, and they put the emphasis on the ‘retro looking black chassis, dual core CPU … and USB 3.0 which combine to make it ‘the fastest and most powerful J series NAS from Synology to date.’

Accidents happen to all of us especially when we least expect them and so it's always a good idea to store all our sensitive data inside rugged storage media devices that can offer a considerably higher level of protection compared to regular everyday ones. Unfortunately as we speak manufacturers have seem to focus most of their resources for the design of rugged PHDs (Portable Hard Drives) and not so much in the design of rugged USB flash drives. As a matter of fact the last and perhaps best quality rugged USB flash drive I’ve ever used was designed and manufactured by Corsair roughly 5 years ago and let me tell you that it was no coincidence that they named it the Survivor GT (the casing was made by alloy used in aircraft). Cost however always plays a huge role when designing a USB flash drive and so most manufacturers seem to favor rubber coated casings that offer both shock and water resistance at a fraction of the price. The DataTraveler R3.0 G2 is the latest USB Flash Drive by Kingston that features such a casing and with us today we have the highest capacity 64GB model.

While there is no doubt that in the not too distant future we will be transferring gigabytes quickly across the planet at very little cost – right now the movement of very large files still requires a physical device. Always happy to play at the high end in terms of quality and price, we are happy to see the SanDisk Extreme pro 128GB USB 3 drive land in our offices. Let’s see if it is driven to succeed.

Plextor's M6e Black Edition is designed for gamers, and performs well in benchmarks. However, we're not convinced that 128GB is enough storage,

Connecting multiple storage drives externally doesn’t work equally well on every connection type. If you were to use a USB 3 connection you would get the speed necessary, but your access times would suffer. If you were to connect it via eSATA you would have the access times, but shared bandwidth between the connected drives.
