For a long time we've been looking for a high quality NAS server to compete on the market with the same speed and abilities as the QNAP and Thecus products. What we've needed to find is a "QNAP-lite" product that allows users to store their data redundantly, allow for high speed file transfers and still use the DLNA protocol to connect to DLNA enabled devices. Many contenders have come and gone, yet all of them have either cost more than they should or performed so poorly that file transfers have taken too long. QNAP and Thecus make great products; sometimes they are too good. It would be very hard for either company to make a high capacity NAS with all of their bells and whistles and still deliver it at under 600 USD.
We've spent so much time talking about the high end market with new products from SandForce and Marvell, but failed to keep track of the mainstream products that cater to the bang for your buck crowd. In this class of products you find controllers from Toshiba, Samsung, JMicron and now Phison. Phison has been around for several years and is one of the early developers of consumer class SSD controllers. Their early products made their way into OEM netbooks, but were never fast enough to warrant a large scale 2.5" form factor product for the discrete aftermarket folks; at least none that read these pages.
Solid State Drives are selling well in 2011, with a growing percentage of enthusiast users adopting one as a fast, primary boot drive. A few weeks ago we reviewed the OCZ Vertex 3 240GB drive, and today we will compare it against the ADATA S511 240GB, a hot new model set to offer the same stunning levels of performance, but at a slightly lower price point.
Today we received an e-mail from Jessica Luken, Global Marketing Director of OCZ Technology stating that a new Vertex 3 Max IOPS SSD was en route and, if you would believe it, we received the package not 20 minutes later. I will have to admit that I was a bit unprepared and stood their wondering what the difference was between the two Vertex 3's at only a $20 upgrade. Every now and then it is refreshing to see a company that believes that rushing into the dog race of technological advance might not be as business smart as simply understanding customer needs. This is definitely the case with Patriot and their new Torqx 2 SSD that not only remains to be a SATA 2.0 drive, but also, is definitely in the price range to attract new SSD enthusiasts. Phison SSDs aren't as well-known to computer hardware enthusiasts as those controllers from SandForce or Indilinx. For many within the industry, SandForce dominated the 2010 market in much the same way that Indilinx did throughout 2009. But not everyone can afford the premium brand names, or desire the fastest solid state drive technology. Building on the name of their budget Torqx TRB product line that came in 32/64GB capacities, Patriot Memory issues the Torqx 2 series for high-performance power users with capacity up to 256GB. The Patriot Torqx 2 SSD is specified to offer 270 MB/s reads over the SATA 3.0 GB/s interface, with write speed reaching 230 MB/s. In this article, Benchmark Reviews confirms these results by testing the Patriot Torqx 2 on a B3-stepping Sandy Bridge platform with plenty of bandwidth headroom.
Its on folks, after a few years of being stonewalled, XSR is back working with OCZ; and what a good way to get back into the swing of things. Today it’s the OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD that we’re looking into; hopefully it’s not the last one we’ll do either, so I better do I good job; though I can’t give them an easy time either, what a dilemna.
Have you ever woken up in the morning and wished for a breakfast in bed? I am certain a few of you individuals have experienced this craving, and let me be the first to tell you that the Thermaltake Max 5G is exactly that craving taunter. Now, many of you are probably wondering what I am trying to get at here, so let me clarify -- bacon. Simply put, this hard drive enclosure smells like bacon in my opinion. Thermaltake must have some kind of telekinesis power, because who would make a HDD enclosure that smells like bacon? Let us not get too carried away with the "bacony" goodness of the Max 5G. Many would have expected this "meaty" enclosure to make a lot of noise, considering it incorporates two fans. With two fans, one would at least expect to hear much of the fan noise. However, after turning it on for quite some time, it was actually not too bad. Continuing on with my daily chores, it almost made me think the fans were not even on, but the stylish blue LEDs convinced me otherwise. I am not sure what is with all the blue LED fans that manufactures keep using on almost all the electronics I use, but it is almost getting to the point where my computer is now a glowing blue monster in the middle of the night. Thermaltake sure seems to be messing around my head when it comes to this enclosure. Read on to find out why!
