Today our at home hardware hacker Artiom shows us how to turn the 1.5TB storage monster into a high performance drive that takes the performance crown away from the Western Digital Velociraptor. Don't think it can be done? We assure you it can, and we show you how. You too can buy a half priced drive and get top end performance.

The hype is finally over regarding USB 3.0 and we are now beginning to see compatible devices trickle into the marketplace. Most new motherboards like the recently reviewed ASUS P7P55D-E Deluxe and MSI 890GXM-G65 come with native USB 3.0 support but even those with older boards can take advantage of faster speeds using a USB 3.0 PCI-e card. USB 3.0 flash drives are few and far between at this point, but hard drive enclosures like the Vantec NexStar 3 SuperSpeed 3.5" we have for review today are readily available from multiple manufacturers.

Indilinx has been tapped to add their 'Barefoot' controller into the design, and a new generation of Solid State Drives has delivered top-level speed and performance. The Patriot (Fusion) Torqx 128GB MLC SSD is one such product, built from a proven architecture that has done well for others of the same controller family. The Patriot Torqx Solid State Drive adds 64MB of Elpida DRAM to the buffer has permanently solved stuttering problems, making raw performance the last bottleneck. An Indilinx 'Barefoot' internal controller commands the bank of Samsung K9HCG08U1M DRAM modules, allowing the Torqx SSD to offer an impressive capacity with top-speed performance. Benchmark Reviews tests the reaction time and bandwidth performance for the PE000143-PFZ128GS25SSDR 128GB model against over two dozen other products in this article.

Why would Kingston be coming out with a 30GB SSD boot drive if they already have a 40GB for sale? Without providing TRIM or garbage collection, Kingston scrapped the product and wanted to produce something the community was asking for. The 30GB boot drive was born with a new controller and slightly better specs.

Synology has taken their winning formula for a NAS and improved upon it further with the DS-212. In addition to the long list of network storage and server functions, two USB 3.0 ports ensure blazing fast file transfers to/from an external drive while the SD card slot is handy for backing up photos or other data.

Today we are testing a new controller from Highpoint that is taking a new approach to high end RAID. The new approach is inexpensive high performance RAID which is not only for corporations and system builders, but also, the casual user as well. The casual user qualifies as anyone who uses a desktop computer, home server, or dedicated NAS. The trick is to pull off the performance, yet also to allow for the same reliability and features that one would expect from a larger, more robust and Expensive enterprise class device.
