The days when an SSD company could take a basic ASIC design and couple it with MLC are long gone. To be competitive in the current enterprise SSD market, your company must innovate. Over the past few months, we have observed innovation happening on two fronts: ASIC design and NAND technology. Each area presents highly complex problems, which in some cases, have been relatively ignored. Certain companies are well positioned to solve these problems. Companies that produce their own NAND and ASICs have a high level of understanding of how all the pieces of an SSD integrate into a single product. They are able to push the boundaries of how the NAND and ASICs interact and squeeze every bit of performance out of the individual components. Micron happens to be one of these companies and Micron P400m is a shining example of what can be accomplished.

Kingston brings SF-2281 to the mainstream with 19nm Toggle NAND and new 5.0.5 firmware. We look at this new mainstream role for LSI SandForce SATA 6G controllers and how it changes the market from now till NGFF.

Ever since SSDs were introduced to the retail market back in 07, one of the main complaints has always been capacity. After all, the first SSD releases were only 32 and 64GB. The hopes of one day seeing the performance of an SSD coupled with the capacity of a hard drive has grown and, too many, we think our analysis of the new Solidata K8-1920E 2TB SSD might be welcome news.

The Patriot Memory Gauntlet Node solves the problem of carrying large amounts of data and sharing it among mobile devices. With it you can install a 2.5" hard drive or solid state drive of your choice, and create a truly mobile storage device. Bi-directional file sharing allows the user to back-up those important files on their tablet or smartphone while on the go.

The TS-469L is another powerful NAS from QNAP aimed at home and small business users, equipped with a HDMI interface that can be connected to our Full-HD TV. Thanks to its HD Station function and it’s modules, we can transform the server into a fully-featured media center for browsing the web, playing media content with XBMC or even for navigating through the Turbo NAS OS interface, without the need of using a PC. As extra bundle, we can acquire separately the useful QNAP Media Center remote or extra RAM for a total of 3GB.

By plugging in the Transcend RDF8 USB 3.0 Memory Card Reader into one of the available USB 3.0 ports on the ASUS UX31A we found performance increased nicely. The sequential read and write speeds jumped up to 81MB/s and 45MB/s, respectively. Speed aside it also supports other memory card formats that we previously couldn't do, so you get more than just a speed boost!

Thecus strikes gold with the new N7510, a high performance NAS that costs less than $100 per drive bay, and it has more features than you'll ever use. This is the model we've waited a long time for.
