The WD Black and Seagate Desktop HDD.15 are both 4TB drives with 64MB of cache, but they differ internally on how they reach this large capacity. WD uses five 800GB platters and Seagate uses four 1TB platters to reach 4TB. Seagate informed us that the new 1TB per platter design significantly increases the hard drive’s performance over the competition. It also consumes 35 percent less power than comparable drives on the market with 4TB capacities, so this will be an interesting matchup...
Storage
With our ever-increasing need for storage, 4TB models couldn't be more tempting. On the scale of temptation, though, one drive is placed higher than all the others: Seagate's Desktop HDD.15. There's one good reason for that: it costs less than $200. We hear you – it sounds crazy. Let’s dig in and find out if it really is.
Storage
The Desktop HDD.15 4TB is Seagate's official 4TB disk for use in desktop PCs. Unlike the 7200.14 disks, it runs at 5900 rpm, which means lower performance. The high data-density does make the Desktop HDD.15 4TB somewhat faster than most 5400/5900 rpm disks. Just like the 7200.14 disks, the Desktop HDD.15 contains 1TB platters, four of them in this case.
Storage
Seagate's Desktop HDD 5TB, which is also known as the ST5000DX000, is the first hard drive with a storage capacity of 5TB to hit the market. At the time of writing, this drive is not yet being sold separately, but it is available as part of a NAS from subsidiary LaCie. We removed the drive from the LaCie 5big NAS and ran our standard test suite on the disk.

Seagate takes storage capacity to the max with the Desktop HDD .15, but does it have the performance for the digital age?
Storage
In today’s market, there are countless storage options out there for you to choose for your current system or for a new build that you are planning and in general we find one of two main options being selected for the primary boot drive – this being either a hard drive which offers up large storage capacities, or a solid state drive that mainly offers up the speed. In the OEM sector, the operating system is typically installed on to a hard drive, whilst custom-built systems from the like of Overclockers UK and PC Specialist use either hard drives or the faster technology that a solid state drive has to offer based on the target audience and the price point.

The Desktop SSHD from Seagate effectively outperforms every mechanical drive on the market, all while maintaining a competitive price point.

When it comes to traditional platter drives, the most innovative company on the block is Seagate. Seagate has many firsts under their belt, more than what I could possibly go into in an article about a single drive. Adding to the long string of innovative products is the new Seagate Constellation.2 Series of products.
Storage
Just last week we showed the Seagate Constellation.2 1TB SATA drive. The new Constellation.2 proved to be a worthy successor to the popular Constellation Series and it outperforms the first generation drive by a significant margin. Seagate also managed to double the capacity of the series while keeping the price of the new drives in line with the old offerings.
