The ioSafe N2 is one of the newest ioSafe devices that build on an already popular concept: robust and resilient data storage backed by a data protection service. This model combines a fire, water and EMI proof chassis with the power of the Synology DSM allowing users to quickly connect the storage to a gigabit network and utilize it over a LAN. It also includes data recovery protection up to $5,000 out of the box.

What is there to say about a storage product that I personally shot with a shotgun and watched it come to life as soon as it was plugged into a USB port? Amazing, incredible, unreal, wicked…I really just don't know where to begin. You see, my job is to look at a product and find faults. The companies that send these products hate that I do things in reverse, but take great pleasure in having an honest opinion on their products (when the results are favorable).

Today for review I’ve got one of the toughest and most rugged hard drives on the market today. At least I think it is, or it’s supposed to be according to the specs. The product is the ioSafe Rugged Portable that features a 750gb hard drive in it. The ioSafe is meant to fully protect your data through the roughest conditions you could possibly think of. We’re not talking carrying it in your bag either, this thing can be burnt, dropped, run over, dunked in water, and you data will still be safe. "

If you spend a lot of time working on your computer, whether for business or pleasure, there is little doubt that you have amassed a great deal of invaluable data. Sure, you can take steps to prevent data loss such as backing up your information onto multiple drives, an external drive or even burning data to an optical disc. But these measures typically only protect you against hardware failure or possibly theft. What would happen if your house caught fire and burned to the ground, or a flood passed through and totally destroyed all of your home’s contents?

The ioSafe Solo is designed to allow the hard drive inside to withstand a single disaster, fire or water. This does not mean you can drop it in the ocean for a day then connect the ioSafe Solo to your PC like nothing happened. What it does mean is that the enclosure will take the damage while keeping the hard drive itself safe. With that said I am left with two choices; I can either drop the ioSafe in water or make a fire. Hmm, no competition there... When in doubt make a fire! Words to live by.

Today for review I’ve got the ioSafe Solo 500gb USB External Hard Drive, and it’s one heck of a drive in both size and how it protects your data. The Solo weighs in at 15lbs and it’s fireproof and waterproof, it’s truly a great way to protect your data from disaster. I’ve spent time with it testing it of course, but I also decided to test just how waterproof it is, I tossed it in a stream nearby to test just how waterproof it is. Read on for videos, pictures and tests of the ioSafe Solo

We literally set this fire- and water-resistant external hard drive on fire. Will it survive? Check it out!

Disaster recovery is for the unprepared and it's very expensive. Disaster prevention on the other hand shows that you're responsible and costs much less.

IoSafe has targeted those home and small business users who need a sizable amount of backup space, and can't afford to lose their data to disasters such as fire or flood. Last year Shawn torture-tested their Solo 500GB USB 2.0 product which passed with flying colors. The only complaint he had was the relatively slow USB 2.0 access speeds. For this year IoSafe releases their SoloPRO version offering the same robust fire and flood protection, with higher capacities and new USB 3.0 interface.

Two years ago at CES we told you about ioSafe and their then new disaster proof external USB 2.0 hard drive that would withstand temperatures up to 1550 Degrees F for up to one half hour. The original Solo was also the first hard drive enclosure that would sustain being fully submerged in water for up to 72 hours. Then, exactly one year ago we tested the ioSafe in our own lab too see what kind of performance we could get out of such a robust system.
